Did You Know? The government provided $3 million in the 2008-09 budget to help individuals who provide in-home care to the elderly and dependent relatives. This money will be used to double the Caregiver Tax Credit, the Infirm Dependent Tax Credit, the Disability Supplement Tax Credit and the Disability Amount for Self Tax Credit. Rentals Social Housing Rental Program (SHRP)The Social Housing Rental Program provides suitable, adequate and affordable rental housing for low-income seniors and families in more than 280 communities throughout the province where the market currently cannot respond to their needs and where there is a provincial interest in responding. Some units located in senior projects are suitable for persons with disabilities.
The program subsidizes the capital and operating costs of SHC-owned and specified non-profit housing units to allow tenants to pay lower rents than they would in the private housing market. Tenant rents are calculated on a sliding scale based on a tenant's ability to pay. Social housing is intended for persons who are mentally and physically capable of living independently with or without supports from the family, community, and health or social services systems. If family members and community agencies, like Home Care, can help a tenant live independently, then that person may live in social housing. Typically, supports for persons with mental and physical disabilities are provided through the Community Living Division of the Ministry of Social Services, the Ministry of Health and local agencies. Housing services like fire safety education and support for tenant associations are available in both family and senior housing projects to help tenants build and maintain their independence. Other services, like the co-ordination of social and recreational activities, health promotion, and informal monitoring are available in selected senior social housing projects to help seniors and persons with a disability maintain their independence.
